EVO vs. STI Shootout
On Tuesday 11/11/08 Import Tuner magazine held their EVO versus STI Shootout at ButtonWillow Raceway. TEIN USA was on hand to support three vehicles competing in the contest – an EVO X GSR, an EVO 9 SE, and a 2005 STi. The rules stated that the cars must be street legal and use the spec Continental Conti Sport 3 tire. Our pits were hectic as various TEIN engineers helped to tune each vehicle for optimal performance. We adjusted ride height, camber, toe, swaybars, tire pressures, etc… to suit each driver in each car.  The event consisted of a 1 lap time attack, 5 lap battle, and relay race. Yes, a relay race. Look for the full article in Import Tuner magazine.
The event was both challenging and satisfying for the crew who battled many obstacles throughout the day. Before the first session the EVO 9 broke a battery terminal and after the practice session it came back into the pits with a broken starter. For the rest of the day the EVO 9 needed to be hooked up to a battery jumper and then push started. Thanks to the crew it never missed a session and driver Rob Walker turned in some awesome times with the limited 360WHP.
The STi had its own fair share of problems and its owner was dedicated in getting his car on track. The body was not quite wide enough to handle the tire size (255/40/18) and offset, which made the rears rub to unsafe levels. The tires were damaged beyond use and without spare 255’s we resorted to using an old set of 265/35/18. So the 265’s were installed up front and 255’s on the rear. The vehicle owner, Scott, and Mike from Evasive Motorsports pounded away at the rear quarter panels to gain the needed clearance. Next the front Charge Speed wide fenders needed some last minute trimming to allow the 265s sufficient clearance. With hard work and some additional suspension adjustments we were able to send driver Andy Hope back out on track and finish the event.

The EVO X had no problems and performed beautifully throughout the day. The plethora of bolt-on parts and C-West full body kit allowed driver Jon Krolewicz to turn in consistent lap times. Owner, Elliott, was happy with the car’s current upgrades which include TEIN Mono Flex coilovers, AMS – intake, hardpipe kit, front mount IC, test pipe, reflashed ECU, and Fujitsubo JDM spec RM01A. When comparing the number of modifications to lap times, this EVO X is awesome.
